Brain Injury Rehabilatation and Development
The term "brain injury" covers a huge variety of conditions. At BIRD, we make no distinction between types of brain injury and aim to treat people of all ages and all levels of severity.
Many people with brain injury are born with the problem due to genetic reasons or complications during pregnancy and birth. Other people suffer trauma during their life from accidents, assaults and natural disorders such as strokes.
The people we treat may be affected by:
Stroke, Autism, Cerebral palsy, Congenital defects, Acquired head injury, Developmental delay, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Hyperactivity / attention deficit disorders, Behavioural / emotional disorders, Other non - specific learning difficulties.
Ours is a unique treatment that complements the more traditional methods such as medicine and adapted education. Our ultimate aim is to radically improve the lives of our patients and their carers.
Some of the children we provide treatment for are severely physically and / or mentally disadvantaged and may be blind with little or no head control. Others have only mild learning difficulties, hyperactivity or behavioural disorders and are in mainstream education.
For many of the people we have been able to help - it was thought that no further improvement was possible. Thankfully BIRD can often manage to markedly improve the lives of the great majority of the people who come to us.
The Reaseheath College dragon boat team in Chester.
14th June 2009.
Round 1, Race 5
Race five saw Reaseheath College in boat 2 up against Dewi Sant in boat 1.
For both teams this was their first time in a dragon boat - although from the closeness of the racing you would never have guessed it.
In a highly competitive battle more reminiscent of a round three race, just inches separated both teams as they crossed the finish line with Reaseheath College just edging Dewi Sant in to second place by 0.30 of a second.
Reaseheath College 1.49.10
Dewi Sant 1.49.40
Round 2, Race 16
Reaseheath College's next race was Race 16 where again in boat 2, they were this time up against The Photons team supporting The Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology.
In their first race The Photons posted a 1.54.31 compared with Reaseheath's faster time of 1.49.10 so things were looking good.
However, dragon boating is quick to pick up and The Photons, having now grasped how dragon boating works, matched Reaseheath College all the way down the course, finally beating them on the line with a 1.45.97 win against Reaseheath's slightly slower 1.49.31.
